Cutting tenons with a CNC router is typically done by creating an end fixture standing the work piece vertically, and clamping it to some sort of user created fixture. This has the obvious limitation of limiting stock length to what will fit (maybe cut a hole in your floor for longer work?) , and having to awkwardly fight gravity to clamp work and get the piece set at the correct height. My shop-built machine has a convertible spindle that can be tilted (manually) to any angle, and I use it horizontally for most joinery operations. Long tenons can be cut with a step to allow a cutter to cut tenons longer than the cutters flute length, and allowing better and faster gluing. The last segment shows the usual cutting procedure.1) climb-cut a shoulder scribe to essentially eliminate any shoulder tear out. 2) Several main cuts to cut the bulk of the material. 3) A final light climb cut to trim to very exact size.
