November 17th, 2022 The temperatures may be dropping but we still have many beautiful specimens showcasing their color at Hammond. Our next Hammond Highlight of Lamiaceae month is the Lion’s Tail. Leonotis leonurus is a late-blooming perennial known for its spectacular orange bloom clusters in the late summer and fall. It can make a unique hedge or specimen plant for attracting pollinators late in the season! November is Lamiaceae Month at the Hammond Research Station. Also known as the sage or mint family, members are commonly aromatic. Think of many family culinary herbs such as mint, basil, rosemary, oregano, and lavender. The family includes genera and species that are both herbaceous and woody, and is distributed worldwide. The Hammond Highlight of the Month is a weekly video series that features a new group of interesting plants each month. New videos are uploaded every Thursday morning and are intended to educate our audiences about different groups of plants and share a peek of the varieties growing at our research station.
