Also present during the occasion were Sosthenes Sohtun, Minister of Community & Rural Development, SAD and GAD and Dr C Lyngdoh, MLA, Umsning among others. Speaking during the inauguration, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, said that investment in the human capital is the greatest investment to make. “Investment in roads, buildings and infrastructures become meaningless without investing in human capital,” he said adding that to enable the youth to grow and compete at the highest level the right guidance and nurturing needs to given to them. The Chief Minister also informed that in terms of investments in Education the state government supports 4172 private schools aiding 65 % salaries of teachers of private schools. “While our numbers in terms of government supporting private schools and colleges surpass all other North Eastern states yet the results are not as expected,” he said. He further said that the multiple categorisation of schools is complicated and the core of problems in the education sector. “How can a structured education system and focussed program be given to a child when the parents and the child have to go through different systems and different schools?” he said and added that while the problems of different categories of schools and teachers are being dealt with the focus on the purpose of having a school in itself is lost. “While we try to solve those problems we lose focus of the child and what is important for the child,” he said. He also informed that there are 206 schools with zero enrollment with 2269 schools with single digit enrolment. “There is a huge challenge infant of us to rationalize schools and the different categories of schools and also rationalisation of teachers without hampering their livelihoods,” he said. Referring to higher levels of education and colleges the Chief Minister said that the government spends about Rs 120 Crs in giving salaries to private colleges. He also stated that most of these colleges are centred in Shillong but colleges are also needed in the rural areas and spoke about the concept of 23 People’s Colleges across the state especially in those areas where there are no colleges and at the grass roots level. “I am happy to fund this college under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund since this college is serving the people and students playing a very pivotal role in imparting education to the students in and around this area,” he said. Rs 23.72 lakhs under the CMSDF 2025-2026 was sanctioned for the construction of new classrooms which was inaugurated today.
