This John Widdicomb dresser was such an amazing quality piece. When I researched the company, I found that they were known for crafting quality pieces made of cherry. I was pretty excited when I started scraping the top and found cherry wood! Because of the raised details on the front of the dresser, it did not lend itself to a full refinish. I decided to strip the top and refinish it and then repaint the body. Cherry wood is notorious for being difficult to stain and I had to refinish this top three times! The weather was in the 100’s when I was refinishing it, so I suspect that played a part in some of my problems. In the end, I achieved a beautiful finish. After filling as many distressing marks on the body as possible, I primed and painted the body. As a final touch, I add gilding to the top and bottom molding as well as the round medallions. Whew. This was quite a project. What do you think?
