Elephanta Caves ( MUMBAI ) 🇮🇳 - A Traveller's Memoir

The "Elephanta Caves", are located on island hills about 11 km north-east of the Apollo Bandar, Mumbai and 7 km from the shore of the mainland, approximately covering an area of 7 km in circumference. The island is named after a colossal elephant found here, which is popularly known as ‘Gharapuri’. At present, the statue of elephant is housed at Jijamata Garden in Mumbai. The date of these caves is still very much debated and varies from the 6th century to the 8th century. This cave temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was excavated sometime in the 8th century by the Rashtrakuta kings. The City of Caves, on an island contains a collection of rock art linked to the cult of Shiva. Here, Indian art has found one of its most perfect expressions, particularly the huge high reliefs in the main cave. #history #india #elephantacaves
