The Thunderbird is a legendary creature found in the mythology of Native American peoples. It is said to bridge heaven and earth, summon storms, and protect its people from evil spirits and destructive forces — a sacred being of great power that brings peace to the world. This Marimba Concerto “Thunderbird” consists of two sections, each inspired by the beliefs and musical traditions of two different Indigenous peoples. The first section draws inspiration from the musical structure of the Ainu, the Indigenous people of Japan. Ainu music is characterized by the repeated development of a single melodic phrase. In this piece, while the marimba and strings share the same theme, each voice unfolds independently, weaving together a rich and organic musical landscape. Following a six-mallet cadenza, the theme reappears vividly in 10/8 beats, evoking the vitality and spirit of the Ainu people who live in harmony with nature in the northern lands. The second section captures the power and energy of the Thunderbird as described in Native American mythology. At the beginning, the marimba and strings paint a soundscape of bird calls, wind, and rustling trees. As the music progresses, dynamic rhythms in 7/8 and 9/8 beats, thunderous drumbeats, and soaring melodies depict the Thunderbird stirring up a storm, inspiring the people, and bringing peace to the world. Through this piece, I hope the Thunderbird will soar beyond borders — uniting the earth and all who live upon it in love and peace.（Kana Omori) 「サンダーバード」は、アメリカ先住民族（ネイティヴ・アメリカン）の神話に登場する伝説の鳥です。天と地を繋いで嵐を呼び起こし、邪悪な精霊や破壊的な存在から民族を守る力強い守護者であり、世界に平和をもたらす神聖な存在とされています。 このマリンバ協奏曲「サンダーバード」は、二つのセクションから成り、それぞれ二つの異なる先住民族の文化や信仰にインスピレーションを受けて作曲しました。 第一セクションは、日本の先住民族であるアイヌの音楽構造に着想を得ています。 アイヌ音楽は、一つのフレーズを繰り返しながら発展していくという特徴があり、この作品では、マリンバと弦楽器が同じ主題を共有しながらも、それぞれの楽器が異なる旋律を奏でています。そしてその異なる旋律が重なることによって、一つの大きなメロディとして聞こえるように構成しました。マリンバの、6本マレットでのカデンツァを挟んだ後半は、8分の10拍子というリズムに乗って、テーマが活き活きとした姿で登場します。 北の大地で自然を崇拝し、調和しながら生活を営んできたアイヌの人々の文化や精神に思いを馳せて描きました。 第二セクションは、ネイティヴ・アメリカンの神話におけるサンダーバードの力強い羽ばたきや湧き上がるエネルギーを表現しました。 冒頭はマリンバと弦楽器で大自然の中の鳥の鳴き声や風の音、風に揺れて擦れる森の木々のざわめきを表し、その後は、嵐を巻き起こして人々を鼓舞し、平和をもたらすサンダーバードの躍動する姿を、8分の7拍子、8分の9拍子の変拍子のリズムと、バスドラムの鼓動、高揚する旋律の展開によって表現しています。 この「サンダーバード」が、国境を越えて全ての民族を繋ぎ、愛に満ちた平和な世界へと導いて世界に羽ばたいてくれることを、願っています。(大森香奈）
