(25 Mar 2013) 1. Wide shot Patrick Ventrell, Acting Deputy State Department Spokesman, walking to podium 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Patrick Ventrell, Acting Deputy State Department Spokesman: "This is political negotiation. There's give and take, and there's going to be advances, and there's going to be moments where, where there are bumps along the road as well. But again, the opposition doesn't rely on one individual or another. This is a group we've been working with, many Syrians who are from a wide array of society, who have a vision of a free, democratic, prosperous Syria. And they've been very clear in demonstrating that that's their interest. And we're going to continue to work with them and to get through these hiccups and, and these bumps along the road, to get them as united as possible." 3. Cutaway reporting asking question 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Patrick Ventrell, Acting Deputy State Department Spokesman: "And so, there are people - there are Sunnis, Alawites, Christians, Kurds, Druze, men and women who are going to be a part of this future Syria. And Assad will go. And we are going to continue to work with this opposition so that they can provide an alternative. And it's not going to rest on one individual or another. It's going to work - it's going to be the result of not only our work, which is tens of millions of dollars, but that of our allies and partners. And so, when you saw Rome, when you saw the secretary there with all of our partners, that's really bringing to bear the effort of a lot of friends of Syria, a lot of different partners who can really help sort of change the calculus and change the, the results on the ground." 5. Wide shot Ventrell walking away from podium STORYLINE: The US State Department on Monday called the resignation of the president of the Syrian National Coalition "bumps along the road". Syria's Western-backed opposition is in disarray after its president resigned and its military leader refused to recognise a prime minister recently elected to lead an interim rebel government. The chaos inside the Syrian National Coalition threatens to undermine its bid to unite the forces battling Syrian President Bashar Assad and better organise the fight to oust his regime. It also could hamper support from the US and other powers, who have hoped the coalition would emerge as the most credible body to channel aid to anti-Assad groups inside Syria and undermine the Islamic extremists who dominate the fight on key fronts of the civil war. In his surprise resignation, coalition president Mouaz al-Khatib expressed frustration with the both the international community and the opposition body itself. "Assad will go," said Patrick Ventrell, Acting Deputy State Department Spokesman, on Monday. He continued: "We are going to continue to work with this opposition so that they can provide an alternative. And it's not going to rest on one individual or another. It's going to work - it's going to be the result of not only our work, which is tens of millions of dollars, but that of our allies and partners." Al-Khatib, who rose to prominence as a preacher in Damascus' most famous mosque, said in a statement posted on his Facebook page that he was making good on an earlier vow to quit if undefined "red lines" were crossed.
