John Fer details the six and a half years he spent as a POW, from getting shot down in Vietnam on February 4, 1967, to his capture, interrogation, being tortured, living conditions, and eventual release. Fer discusses being cellmates with John McCain starting in 1971 and calls him a bright spot in a miserable time. John Fer was born in 1937 in Long Beach, California. He was commissioned through the U.S. Air Force Academy and flew combat missions in Southeast Asia. He was captured and taken as a Prisoner of War, spending six years in captivity alongside John McCain. Upon release and recovery, he sought further education and continued to serve in the Air Force until his retirement in 1990. From the 2018 HBO / Kunhardt Film Foundation (KFF) Documentary "John McCain: For Whom The Bell Tolls." Shortly after being diagnosed with brain cancer, McCain allowed unprecedented access to his daily life in Washington.
