The Threads Fashion Project on the Pembury Estate made a pieced work, the Hackney Print, using traditional African printing and dyeing techniques to represent the different communities, cultures and people that make Hackney such an exciting place to live. The Hackney Print embodies four themes seen by the Threads Fashion Project as the essence of Hackney: multicultural, inspirational, unified and home. This film is a behind the scenes glimpse into the making of the Hackney Print, and shows how the young women in the Threads Fashion Project used a variety of textile techniques from traditional African batik and starch resists to contemporary street-art-styled stencils as well as sweet potatoes and yams to tell their Hackney story. The Hackney Print and this film were featured in the exhibition 'African Threads – Hackney Style: 400 years of textile journey from Africa to Hackney (October 2015 to January 2016). ©Peabody/ Threads Fashion Project Hackney Museum and Threads Project developed free learning resources to accompany the exhibition and film.
