Aberdeen, often referred to as the "Granite City" due to its distinctive architecture, offers visitors a rich historical experience woven into the fabric of its silvery-grey buildings. The best examples of this heritage are found in Old Aberdeen, home to the University of Aberdeen, King's College Chapel (begun around 1500), and the ancient St Machar's Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century. In the city centre, major landmarks include the towering, Gothic revival Marischal College—the second largest granite building in the world—and the medieval Provost Skene's House, a museum housed in one of the city's oldest townhouses from 1545. Visitors can also explore the historic Castlegate area, featuring the 17th-century Tolbooth Museum, once a town hall and prison, and the ornate Mercat Cross. For modern-day visitors, the city's main retail hub is the "Granite Mile" along Union Street, a long thoroughfare lined with high-street shops, designer outlets, and independent stores.
