█ OVERVIEW What started as a simple need for a few floating shelves turned into an artistic experiment. Flowing walnut forms, subtle black epoxy details, and inlaid oak tree slices that trace a natural path across each surface. █ DESCRIPTION In this video, I create a set of custom floating shelves designed to be as functional as they are sculptural. We needed more shelving around the house, but rather than buying something ordinary, I wanted to make pieces that carried a sense of movement and artistry. The shelf showcased in the video was made for our front window, where a growing collection of plants had overtaken a cluster of mismatched stands. The space looked cluttered with the legs of the stands pointing every which way, so I built a floating shelf strong enough to hold the plants while simplifying the look: a clean line that lets the plants and natural light take center stage. I built three more shelves for the stairway book nook, transforming what used to be an empty wall recess into a warm and usable space. Each shelf is crafted from walnut, with a power-carved leading edge that mimics the organic movement of a live edge while maintaining a refined, flowing and intentional shape. Across the surface, oak tree cookies are inlaid in a meandering path and outlined with a thin trace of black epoxy, a technique that would later inspire the inlays used in the Credenza build. The mounting systems are tailored to their locations: the front window shelf is supported by hidden ½-inch threaded rods, while the nook shelves use a three-sided tongue-and-groove cleat system that locks them seamlessly into the surrounding walls. Interestingly, this project began before the Credenza build, and many of the techniques developed here became the groundwork for that later piece. I came back to finish the window shelf and edit the footage afterward as a way of tracing the evolution of my process. Some of the footage comes from before I ever planned to share my work publicly, so the quality may vary slightly from the channel’s usual standard. The intro takes a playful, cinematic approach, parodying an X-Files-style opening to highlight the theme of “floating shelves” in a fun, mysterious way. █ TABLE OF CONTENTS: • Introduction – 0:00 • Milling and carving the walnut – 1:13 • Oak inlay – 4:27 • Pouring epoxy – 7:45 • Epoxy clean-up – 8:31 • Sanding – 9:17 • Mounting rods – 9:51 • Dry fit – 11:29 • Finishing – 12:38 • Installation – 15:59 • Final Reveal – 16:47 #woodworking #floatingShelves #epoxy #walnut #oak #inlay #finefurniture #customfurniture #woodart #carving #interiordesign #finewoodworking #homedecor Music from Premiumbeat.com Archival footage licensed from Shutterstock
