Today we honour Saint Teresa Eustochio Verzeri (1801–1852), an Italian nun and foundress of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Born Ignazia Verzeri into a noble family in Bergamo, she felt called to consecrate her life to Christ despite strong family expectations. She later founded a religious congregation dedicated to education, especially of the poor and the marginalised. Saint Teresa is remembered for her “preventive method” in education — guiding young people gently, forming their hearts before problems arise, and leading with patience rather than punishment.
