Trans-Sumatra highway could affect critical remnant forests on the island

Most of the forests that once covered Indonesia's Sumatra Island have already been cleared for timber, coal mining, pulp and palm oil. Now a 2,700-km long highway planned for the island threatens the blocks of virgin forest that remain. Studies show forest have already been degraded following road developments in Sumatra. The trans-Sumatran highway would cut through the island’s last major remnant forests. It would also follow the northern boundary of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, which would cut the park off from the neighboring nature reserve.
