The Waikoloa Dry Forest Preserve protects some of the last remaining Hawaiian dry forest which is one of the most endangered forest types in the world. We protect ancient wiliwili trees, the icon of the lowland dry forest. We also promote and plant 35 native plant species including 14 endangered species. We have created massive fuelbreaks that, if properly maintained, will help to protect the area from wildfire. We have also begun large-scale removal of non-native grasses that fuel fires and compete with native species. We collect thousands of native seeds, and propagate them on site in our nursery. We intend to grow about 3,000 plants next year, and plant them out in the preserve. We're working hard to replace the non-native grassland with the native plant community that once dominated the leeward side of our island. We're making great progress and some of the areas are unrecognizable after just a few years of management. Some of our most successful work involves our community. We provide children and adults with educational, fun and inspiring experiences in the forest preserve with the hope of creating lasting connections with nature and empowering people to become better stewards of our environment. Thank you for supporting our work and for considering our Dry Forest Recovery project.
