Akara by Ben Chaim Alina Kirshon Goldman - Soprano Susanna Kolker - Piano "Paul Ben-Haim (Frankenburger) was born in Munich, Germany on n 1897. After serving in World War I, he graduated from the Munich Academy of Music (1920) where his teachers included Friedrich Klose (composition). He went on to hold the posts of choral director and vocal coach at the Bayerisches Staatstheater under Bruno Walter and, in 1924, became Kapellmeister of the Augsburg Opera. His career as a conductor in Germany was cut short by Hitler's rise to power, and in 1933 he emigrated to British Mandate of Palestine in 1933 and settled in Tel Aviv. Becoming an Israeli citizen upon that nation's independence in 1948, Frankenburger changed his name after his father's Hebrew name to Ben-Haim. In 1957 Ben-Haim was awardwd with the Israel Prize for Music. He produced a large body of works in all concert genres, including two symphonies, and concertos for violin, cello, and piano. Many of his compositions incorporate themes derived from the folk music of the Holy Land, and his success in achieving a fusion between solid German Romanticism and Middle Eastern modality was emilated by many younger Israeli composers."
