Syd Barrett is one of the leading figures of the psychedelic underground scene in England since the mid-1960s. He was a founding member of Pink Floyd but soon left the group due to his declining mental and physical health. As a result, his talent was overshadowed, although he later released some recordings that showcased glimpses of his tremendous genius. Syd Barrett wrote most of the songs on "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" (1967), Pink Floyd's first album. Perhaps the most emblematic song on that LP is Syd Barrett's "Lucifer Sam." Fifteen years later, the now renowned Californian band True West included an impressive version of "Lucifer Sam" on the A-side of their self-released debut single. True West is associated with the Paisley Underground scene of mid-1980s California, but like other bands of that era, they had their own distinct personality. Although the band's lineup changed over the years, they left us with several great albums and compilations.
