Ovando Montana By Ted Welti, May 27, 2025 Adapted From El Paso - by Marty Robbins, 1959 Intro C Dm G G7 C C Dm Out in the Montana town of Ovando G G7 C I fell in love with a trick-riding girl. C Dm Nighttime would find me in Trixi's Saloon, G G7 C Music would play and this maiden would whirl. C Dm Brown as an elk were the eyes of sweet Trixi, G G7 C Winking and flirting while casting a spell. C Dm My love was strong for this Montana maiden, G G7 C I was in love, but in vain I could tell. F Gm Bb One night a wild young cowboy came in, C7 C7 Wild as the Montana wind... C7 Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing, C7 F With Trixi McCormick, the girl that I loved. G G7 So in an - ger C Dm I challenged his right for the love of this maiden; G G7 C Down went his hand for the gun that he wore. C Dm My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat G G7 C The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor. C Dm Just for a moment I stood there in silence, G G7 C Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done. C Dm Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there; G G7 C I had but one chance and that was to run. F Gm Bb Out through the back door of Trixi’s I ran, C7 C7 Out where the horses were tied... C7 I picked a good one; he looked like he could run, C7 F Up on his back and away I did ride. G G7 Just as fast as C Dm I could from the Montana town of Ovando, G G7 C Out to the steam holes down by Yellowstone. C Dm Back in Ovando my life would be worthless; G G7 C Everything's gone in life, nothing is left. C Dm But it's been so long since I've seen the young maiden, G G7 C My love is stronger than my fear of death. F Gm Bb I saddled up and away I did go, C7 C7 Riding alone in the dark... C7 Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me, C7 F Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart. G G7 And at last here C Dm I am at the hill looking up to Ovando, G G7 C I can see Trixi's Saloon from below. C Dm My love is strong and it pushes me onward, G G7 C Up the hill to Trixi’s Saloon I go. C Dm Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys, G G7 C Off to my left ride a dozen or more. C Dm Shouting and shooting; I can't let them catch me, G G7 C I've got to make it to Trixi’s back door. F Gm Bb Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel C7 C7 A deep burning pain in my side... C7 It's getting harder to stay in the saddle. C7 F I'm getting weary, unable to ride. G G7 But my love for C Dm The maiden is strong and I rise where I've fallen; G G7 C Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest. C Dm I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle, G G7 C I feel the bullet go deep in my chest. C Dm From out of nowhere, Trixi has found me, G G7 C Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side. C Dm Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for, G G7 C C One little kiss and Trixi goodbye. Outro Dm G G G C
