So we decided to get some laying hens. Thinking we had 3 weeks before we needed to worry about eggs arriving we thought we had loads of time to build our ‘Chickshaw’. For those of you who haven’t came across this term before, a chickshaw is rickshaw for chickens. The chickshaw is the night time refuge for the hens to sleep safely at night and a place for them to lay their eggs in in the day. It Is pulled around the pasture every day or so to a fresh patch of pasture using man power. Turns out the hens started laying 3 days after they arrived on the farm. This made us have to jump into action a wee bit quicker 😂 With the help of my Dad we gathered what we had around the place (some we had planned to use and other random stuff laying around) and put together this chickshaw. I’m happy to say it was actually a huge success. There are many little tweaks we could have made now that we see how it operates but honestly it is totally fit for purpose and not a bad effort for just making it up as we went along. We can take it in later In the winter and iron out any kinks.
