As the 19th century Ohio & Erie Canal entered Akron, Ohio from the south, heading to its highest point at Summit Lake, it had to make one, last, steep climb. It's more than 100 feet up through he steep, narrow Cascade Valley. To make this climb to the high point on the canal, it needed a flight of 15 locks, cut into the bottom of Cascade Valley, and paralleled by an equally long string of water-powered mills, including the original Quaker Oats factory. Join me as I start at Lock 15, at the bottom of Cascade Valley, as I walk up the Towpath Trail, toward Summit Lake. Let's see what's left today. Filmed on location.
