"The Science of Life Before Birth" is our full-length science documentary video on prenatal development, the development of a human embryo and fetus from the beginning of life at fertilization to the event of childbirth. The heart of this production is real endoscopic video of human embryos and fetuses alive inside their mothers' wombs at different weeks and months of pregnancy. Look through a 4 week baby's transparent skin to see the baby's heart beating. Watch a 6 week baby independently move his arms. This rare footage was obtained by a medical technique called endoscopy, in which a tiny light and a tiny lens at the tip of a long needle are inserted through the wall of the uterus (or womb) and used to collect footage of the baby through the transparent amniotic sac. This footage is supplemented with ultrasound scans of fetuses in the later months of pregnancy when endoscopy becomes a less effective imaging technique due to the baby's large size. "The Science of Life Before Birth" was produced by the Education Resource Fund and is an updated and expanded version of the science documentary titled "The Biology of Prenatal Development," which was distributed by the National Geographic Society.
