Tiffany Yu’s Journey from Shame to Disability Advocate

“If you fundamentally believe that disabled people are subhuman, we are going to continue to be dehumanized.” At the age of nine, Tiffany Yu was in a car accident that ultimately took her father’s life and left her with a permanent brachial plexus injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. For years, she tried to hide the fact that she was disabled and attempted to “blend into the wall,” not wanting to bring attention to herself. While attending Georgetown University, Tiffany finally spoke about her story publicly and started the group Diversability, “a social enterprise whose mission is to change the stigma surrounding disabilities and create community.” Today, Tiffany continues to serve as CEO and Founder of Diversability and advocates to increase intersectional disability representation and visibility.
