The Halifax International Security Forum kicked off on Thursday, for the first time in Taipei. The two-day event was opened by President Lai Ching-te, and will be closed by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim on Friday. Amid the attendees are former US Deputy National Security Advisor Matt Pottinger, and Abe Akie, the wife of late Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. In his inauguration speech, Lai spoke about the importance of unity among democracies to counter authoritarianism. Let’s hear more. Lai Ching-te President I recently announced that we will prioritize special budget allocations to ensure that our defense budget exceeds 3% of GDP. In addressing China’s red supply chain, let’s create non-red global supply chains. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will maintain the status quo. We will not seek conflict. Rather, we are willing to engage in dialogue with China. Since its first edition in 2011, the forum has brought together political and military officials and experts every year to discuss international security affairs. The security forum holds an annual summit in Canada every year. The event in Taiwan is the forum’s first outside of North America, and organizers say Taipei was chosen in order to show support for democracy and freedom.
