Shalom everyone! This week we will be celebrating the Feast of Purim. It is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. Purim commemorates the time when the Jewish people, while living in exile in Persia, were saved from extermination by an evil Persian government official named Haman. The story of Purim is told in the Biblical book of Esther. Esther was a beautiful Jewish girl who became queen of Persia. Her faith and courage would be used by God to save her people from the evil plans of Haman. Purim means "lots," because lots were cast by Haman to determine the time for the destruction of the Jews. During the Feast of Purim we retell the story of Esther in a "rousing" and humorous way, as we "blot" out the name of Haman with noisemakers. We also boldly cheer the name of our heroes, Esther and her uncle Mordechai. On Purim is customary to wear costumes (nothing scary) as a part of the celebrations. There are special dessert treats called "hamantaschen" (lit. Haman's pockets), that are enjoyed along with other foods. It's a blast! So come join us this Friday night for a special Shabbat service as we celebrate Purim. Our services will begin at 7:30 P.M. We will have an introduction to Purim, a special time of worship, a "boisterous" reading of the story of Purim, and a short exhortation titled "Resisting the Hamans of our time." We also will have warm food and fellowship at the close of our services. So come join us for a wonderful time of learning, fellowship, and worship at Adat Shalom. See you there.
