Red Baron 3D is a patched/updated version of 1997's Red Baron II. Red Baron 3D came out the following year in 1998, and was developed and published by Dynamix/Sierra On-Line. This is personally my favorite WWI flight sim, was the first game I ever played, and is still one of my favorite games in the flight sim genre. For one thing, the Campaign mode is amazing, with missions for every squadron in your map sector (which is huge) being randomly generated. The French, British, German, and American air forces are represented, with the majority of the Western Front also present. Players can earn promotions, medals, customize their aircraft paint jobs, and eventually plan their own missions. If that's not enough, the game comes with a single mission mode, which also includes a mission editor to make everything from historical scenarios to random missions. It also includes an instant action mode. Overall this is still a solid game after almost 30 years. Graphically the game has not held up terribly well. It's not terrible by any means, but the 3DFx glide mode included in the updated version doesn't look real good, especially compared to other games of this era. The audio is solid, with a decent selection of menu music, and some memorable sounds in the simulation mode. This game is still available on GOG.com and Steam, and is definitely worth playing. It does have some bugs/issues on modern hardware, but it is very playable.
