Andy Palacio's heritage never ceases to amaze and the Garifuna Collective keeps the fire burning. Performance 7 july 2019 The Garifuna are descended from slaves who ran aground on the coast of the Carribbean Island St. Vincent in the 18th century. They survived for a century and blended with the Arawak indigineous people already living there. The population was deported to Roatan by the British who got hold of the island. Today, there are still 200,000 Garifuna, who live mostly in Belize and Honduras. They speak an Arawak language with African, Spanish and English influences. The most important musician in the Garifuna community in Belize was Andy Palacio. When Andy and the Garifuna Collective produced the album Wátina in 2007, it did not only draw attention to Belizean music but it also inspired a generation of Belizean musicians to examine their roots. Andy died suddenly only a year later, but his heritage never ceases to amaze and the Garifuna Collective keeps the fire burning.
