Does pee make a good fertilizer? I run an experiment using diluted human urine to grow leafy green vegetables, and compare it to other forms of fertilizer designed for leafy greens. Many gardeners are aware that human urine can be used as a fertilizer for plants. In this video, I am testing out growing Little Gem Lettuce and Purple Lady Bok Choy and fertilizing with a solution of human urine and water in a 1:10 ratio. For the control groups, I compare it to potting mix only, blood meal, and an all-purpose liquid fertilizer. Blood meal and the all-purpose liquid fertilizer were applied based on package recommendations. Blood meal is a fertilizer with high nitrogen, is ideal for leafy greens, and widely sold. As it is a slower release than the liquid fertilizers, I only applied it upon seeding. The all-purpose liquid fertilizer has an equal ratio of NPK of 1-1-1. I applied it weekly for 3 weeks (weeks 3-6). As with most liquid fertilizers, the nutrients are released quickly. Human urine has a high concentration of nitrogen, which is ideal for leafy greens. The urine solution used as fertilizer in this experiment consists of 1 part urine to 10 parts water. The Rich Earth Institute has recommendations on how to use urine as a fertilizer for home gardeners. https://richearthinstitute.org/wp-con... Little Gem Lettuce and Purple Lady Bok Choy were chosen because they are both greens that mature quickly and have similar nutrient requirements (high nitrogen). Future experiments: If I were to conduct this experiment again, I would likely use a larger amount of urine and possibly a higher ratio of urine to water. Additionally, I would not store the urine for as long. For the 1st two applications, I had stored the urine for 2 weeks to reduce potential pathogens and sanitize the urine to an extent. However, I became concerned that I was losing some of the nitrogen as the urea was converted to ammonia gas. For the 3rd application, the urine was only stored for about 24 hours. According to the aforementioned publication from the Rich Earth Institute, it is not necessary for home gardeners to sanitize their urine. Additionally, the urine solution is poured on the soil around the plants and not directly on the plant leaves anyway.
