The village has a population of 2538 people according to the 2011 census. The village is known for its agricultural produce and its proximity to the River Godavari. The history of Mudunuru is not very well documented, but it is believed that it was part of the ancient Kalidindi zamindari, which was ruled by the descendants of the Vishnukundina dynasty. The Kalidindi zamindari was one of the largest and oldest feudal estates in the coastal Andhra region, and it spanned across parts of West Godavari and Krishna districts. The zamindars of Kalidindi were patrons of art, culture, education and religion, and they built many temples, forts, schools and colleges in their territory. They also played an important role in the political and social history of Andhra Pradesh, as they participated in various movements and struggles against the British colonial rule and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The West Godavari district, where Mudunuru is located, was formed on 15 April 1925 with Bhimavaram as its headquarters. The district is situated in the coastal Andhra region, and it is bounded by the River Godavari on the east, the Bay of Bengal on the south, the Krishna district on the south-west and the Rajahmundry district on the north. The district is famous for its fertile lands, rich culture, diverse cuisine and scenic beauty.
