The invention of the match as a tool for quickly starting fires was revolutionary. Dating back to as early as the fourteenth century in China when small sticks of wood were impregnated with sulfur to create an instant flame, the simple matchstick has since seen great development and refinement. Few however could have foreseen the great tragedy that would befall hundreds of working-class men and women around the world so many years later. Yellow, or white, phosphorus was a key ingredient in the match manufacturing process from the second half of the 19th Century. Factory workers inhaling the poisonous fumes of white phosphorus suffered from a disease that became known colloquially as ‘phossy jaw’ (phosphorus necrosis). Despite the huge number of disfigured and dead workers, it was only through protest, the strike by the "London Matchgirls" in 1888, and finally, much international cooperation that brought an end to the horrible disease in the mid-20th Century. So how did things go so tragically wrong for the humble matchstick? 🔔 Subscribe to my channel for more history and other interesting content: 👍🏻https://www.youtube.com/c/PhilipThomp... #phossyjaw #history #documentary
