Higher mileage as a runner might not just make you fitter (in the traditional sense), but it might just be the reason you’re still strong when everyone else is falling apart late on race day. TAKE THE MARATHON READINESS QUIZ NOW: https://marathon-readiness-quiz.score... In this video, I wanted to break down a new study examining whether higher lifetime and seasonal mileage helps runners maintain running economy under prolonged fatigue. Not just VO₂ max. Not just top-end speed. But efficiency when tired. Ie. What we runners often refer to as "durability". I wanted to explain the differences from my perspective as a coach between fitness and durability, why many runners don’t slow down because they “lack fitness” but because their economy deteriorates, and how consistent mileage compounds over months and years to reinforce mechanics, tissue tolerance, and energy return. We also talk about why easy miles matter more than most runners think, how high-level athletes structure volume across seasons, and why durability is often the missing link between strong training and strong racing. If you’ve ever struggled to close a race after a "good" build, felt like your form collapses late, or wondered why your training performances don’t always convert to race day, this video will hopefully help you rethink how volume fits into your long-term development! ⸻ Relevant Links Study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40878...
