Well done on receiving the first part of your braces. Cleaning your expander is crucial to maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing food and plaque buildup. Adjustment Period After your expander has been fitted you may experience some discomfort on your palate for the first few days. This is normal and to be expected while getting used to it. If pain relief is required, take what you would usually take for a headache. Speech Your speech may be affected for the first few days. This is normal. Use the wax to relieve any rubbing or discomfort as shown Warm salty mouth rinses can be used if you develop any sores or blisters on your tongue at the beginning. (Stir 1 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water). Rinse After Eating Immediately after meals, rinse your mouth with mouthwash to remove any food particles that may have gotten trapped around the expander. Use a Green Tepe Brush / Water Flosser Gently insert a green tepe brush under the expander as shown to remove food and plaque. To also clean around your expander you can use a water flosser. Follow the video for examples of how to use it. Brush Thoroughly Brush your teeth and around the palate expander twice a day (morning and night). Pay special attention to the areas around the expander and its metal parts, which can trap food. Be Cautious of Sticky or Hard Foods To keep your palate expander clean and in good condition, avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods like caramel, gum, or hard sweets, as they can get stuck or damage the appliance. By following these steps, you'll keep your palate expander clean and your mouth healthy throughout your treatment! Expansion instructions •   Turn the expander once a day until your next appointment. •   To turn the expander you must lie down underneath a strong light, tilt your chin up and open your mouth wide. •   Carefully insert the swivel key into the hole in the middle of the appliance. •   Steadily push the key towards the back of the mouth until you feel the rotation stop, the next hole should appear the following day. Carefully remove the key once the rotation is completed.
