Taito added a unique twist on the one on one beat'em up format by adding in aerial combat with a nod towards Dragon Ball Z. Battles take place in mid air arenas and you can fly in any direction you choose, unlike most fighters you have a large selection of both ranged and close combat attacks. Which give bouts a very different dynamic to games like Street Fighter. Special moves however can only be performed if you have the right amount of psychic energy if not you have to charge your psychic meter till you have enough energy. As a final twist your psychic energy is also linked to your health and the less health you have the more psychic energy you can hold. The concept is great but the gameplay isn't anywhere near as good as it should be. Taito's lack of experience making versus arcade fighters really shows even in this sequel, characters are just too unbalanced, most characters have at least one move that strips off 1/3 of your opponents health and with psychic energy so quick to charge you can fire them off constantly, finally it's all too easy to get characters stuck in infinite loop combos making the combat unforgiving for beginners. For this video we did a story playthrough / longplay / walkthrought as the final hidden character Burn, who was the main hero of the original game. Psychic Force 2012 is the second game in the series and managed to improve on the first game, but not enough to make it standout from the crowded arcades of the late 90s. Psychic Force 2012 is one of a number of games that doesn't support VGA on Dreamcast. It's been suggested that the reason it doesn't support VGA is that the game used a non-standard resolution. Which the Dreamcast VGA mode would not have correctly supported.
