The story of Epiphany is of the customary power of this world, the command of status and wealth, overwhelmed by the simple majesty of a child, whose power lies not in riches, or armies, or even worldly learning, but in humility, gentleness and selflessness. The magi, the Kings knelt down before him. For the three Kings this moment of epiphany, this moment of realization, was they may be of royal blood in their own right, they might be accounted wise and powerful in wordly and human terms, but now they have come before that which is beyond them all. And in the gifts they bring they show the wonder that the divine is not some far away concept but real, as embraceable and as pure as a newborn child. Whether it happened exactly in the way that Matthew describes is not the point. For this is a journey that we must all undertake, sooner or later. For some it will be during their lives, for others, perhaps, only at the very end of their life on this earth. Part of the Church of Ireland, St Nicholas Church, Adare and its fellow churches teaches and ministers within the progressive Christianity tradition, with influences from the scholars who built on the work of the Jesus Seminar. It seeks to be a church that is welcoming and inclusive, affirming and open in its liberal theology; and whilst we don’t claim to have all the answers, we are most certainly committed to ‘living the questions’. We have influences of Celtic spirituality in our worship and view of the natural world, living as we do in the beauty of County Limerick. The Church of Ireland also forms part of the Anglican communion which is an association of Anglican churches from 38 provinces, including the Church of England, the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Church in Wales, the Episcopal Church in the USA (otherwise known as the Episcopalians) and churches across the globe. With 80 million members, it is the third largest Christian body in the world, after the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.
