“The brother-sister team of Alex Campbell and Olabelle was born in Ashe County, North Carolina near Lansing and were raised along the banks of the New River where at an early age they learned to appreciate and enjoy the old time Country Music and gospel songs. When they organized their groups, they took the name of "The New River Boys" as their trade name. “Their family moved to Pennsylvania where they performed in different Country music bands in that area. “In 1949 they organized what is presently known as "Alex Campbell, Olabelle and The New River Boys and Girls." Deacon Brumfield joined the group soon after with his old time Dobro guitar. “Deacon Brumfield was born in Rising Sun, Md. and has become famous with his style of playing the old time Dobro guitar. “The group is presently broadcasting over W/COJ, Coatesville, Penna., WBMD, Baltimore, Md., and other stations in the U.S.A. “Olabelle and Alex write and record many of their own songs and have become known throughout the U.S.A. as a group featuring the old time original Country style music. They feature many of the old time gospel songs. Wherever their records have been heard, they have become good sellers. “They sincerely hope you will appreciate these Country Music selections.” [From the liner notes to their New River EP-101] This song is an instrumental version of the widely recorded “Aloha Oe” by Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838-1917) of Hawaii.
