A dangerous pyroclastic density current (PDC) surged down the slopes of Mayon Volcano on February 26, 2026, moving in the direction of Legazpi City in Albay, Philippines. PDCs are fast-moving avalanches of superheated gas, ash, and volcanic debris capable of reaching speeds over 100 km/h (60+ mph). They are among the most hazardous phenomena produced during explosive volcanic activity. In this footage, the dense ash cloud can be seen hugging the terrain as it descends Mayon’s flanks. Mayon, one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, is known for its near-perfect cone and its history of sudden explosive events. Authorities typically establish permanent danger zones due to the risk of lava flows, rockfalls, ashfall, and pyroclastic flows during heightened unrest. This video documents today’s activity as it unfolded. Conditions around active volcanoes can change rapidly. Always follow official guidance from local authorities and monitoring agencies.
