In 1895, a group of hopeful Italians braved a sea crossing on a stinking cattle boat to come to Arkansas. It was the promised land: they were coming to work and buy parts of a cotton plantation. They were farmers working for someone else in Italy, but they would be landowners in America! The story is documented in The Italians of Sunnyside: The History From 1895, by Elizabeth "Libby" Olivi Borgognoni. This video features her son, Dr. Anthony Borgognoni, presenting highlights from the book at a book-signing at Little Rock's Historic Arkansas Museum, Jan. 19, 2022. Libby Borgognoni is the daughter of some of those first arrivals. Anthony Borgognoni is president and co-founder of the Italians of Sunnyside Foundation, established by descendants of those early Italian immigrants to preserve their heritage and pass their stories to future generations.
