Thank you Dr. Kaylea Booth #southcollegeptaknoxville for demonstrating the Epley Maneuver. Thank you Dawnette Waters [email protected] for being the patient. Kaylea does a great job demonstrating the process while using the DIY posterior semicircular canal she designed to help show how each move impacts the direction of the otoconia crystals. This visual was incredibly helpful to me as I am not a vestibular expert. Here are the step-by-step movements for the Epley maneuver which is designed to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition caused by the displacement of small crystals in the inner ear. Step 1: Identify the Affected Side. Begin by determining which ear is affected by vertigo. Step 2: Sit on a Bed. Sit the patient on the edge of the bed with legs extended in front. Step 3: Turn Your Head 45 Degrees. Turn their head to the side of the affected ear at a 45-degree angle. For example, if the left ear is affected, turn their head to the left. Step 4: Lie Down Quickly. Quickly lie the patient down on their back, keeping their head turned to the side. Your shoulders should be on the bed, but your head should be hanging slightly off the edge. Step 5: Wait for 30 Seconds. Keep them in the position for about 30 seconds, allowing any dizziness to subside. Step 6: Turn Your Head to the Opposite Side. Without raising their head, turn it to the opposite side (the side not affected by vertigo). For example, if you started with your head turned to the left, turn it to the right. Step 7: Wait for Another 30 Seconds. Remain in this position for another 30 seconds. Step 8: Roll Your Body to the Side. Keeping their head turned to the non-affected side, roll their entire body in the same direction until they are lying on their side. Their head should still be at a 45-degree angle. Step 9: Slowly Sit Up. Slowly sit them up while keeping their legs extended in front of them. Take a moment to allow any remaining dizziness to subside. Repeat these steps as needed, especially if their vertigo symptoms persist.
