A personality record instead of a dance band by way of a change. This upload does feature Freddy Gardener so is dance band related and does of course come from the 'Golden Age'. Before settling in Hollywood, Binnie Barnes appeared as vocalist on a Harry Roy side and he appeared on one of her solo records. Perhaps her best remembered film appearance was as Katherine Howard in "The Private Life of Henry V111" starring Charles Laughton. Binnie made a few solo records for Parlophone, there're not seen very often and this is a good example. Images of late '20s and '30s film star John Boles are used. A versatile actor/singer he played opposite almost everyone from Boris Karloff to Shirley Temple. Dance band fans may recall he sang "It Happened in Monterey" and "Song of the dawn" in the King of Jazz, without his little black moustache. Recorded November 1934 ** Transfer and video by Jonathan Holmes **
