Muhadith Ilyas begins by explaining the concept of "Hadith Hasan" and highlights that early scholars of Hadith, including the teachers of Bukhari and those before him, did not recognize this category of Hadith. To them, Hadith Hasan referred to something cute, strange & odd. The early Hadith scholars (Al-Mutaqaddimeen) rejected Hadith Hasan and considered it weak. Sheikh Ilyas provides evidence of early scholars who rejected Hadith Hasan and did not rely on it, such as Ahmad Bin Hanbal, Shu'ba bin Al-Hajaj, Sufyan Al-Thawri, Ibraheim Nakhi, and Yahya bin Saied Al-Qahtan. Shu'ba, who was a renowned muhadith, is reported to have said that he would avoid Hasan Hadith and said the following: قُلْتُ: تُحدِّثُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ العَرْزَمِيِّ، وَتَدَعُهُ؟! قَالَ: نَعَمْ. قُلْتُ: إِنَّهُ حَسَنُ الحَدِيْثِ. قَالَ: مِنْ حُسْنِهِ فَرَرْتُ. "I asked him (Shu'ba): 'You narrate from Muhammad bin Ubaidullah Al-Arzami and then abandon his Hadith?' He replied: 'Yes.' I said: 'But it is Hasan (good) Hadith.' He said: 'I ran away from it due to its Hasan (cuteness).'" Similarly, Waki' bin Jarah reports in his book (الزهد لوكيع وكيع بن الجراح) that Ibrahim Al-Nakhi, an early & major Tabi'i, said that people used to feel embarrassed if they possessed Hasan Hadith or if their Hasan Hadith was mentioned in study circles. He said in the following narration: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: «كَانُوا يَكْرَهُونَ إِذَا اجْتَمَعُوا أَنْ يُخْرِجَ الرَّجُلُ أَحْسَنَ حَدِيثِهِ أَوْ أَحْسَنَ مَا عِنْدَهُ "Ibn Awn narrated to us from Ibrahim Al-Nakhi, who said: 'They disliked when they gathered that a person should mention his Hasan Ahadith or the best of what he had.'" Imam Ahmad did not recognize the category of Hasan Hadith, as he rejected it and considered it weak. He gave preference to weak Hadith over opinions and qiyas (analogical reasoning). He said that Hadith Hasan (weak) should not be used in matters of Tawheed (Islamic monotheism) and Ahkaam (Islamic legal rulings). Ilyas also explains that Ibn Al-Qayyim, who is considered one of the most knowledgeable person in Hanbali circles, stated in his book ('laam ul Muwaqqi'een) that when Imam Ahmad referred to weak Hadith, he actually meant Hasan Hadith of their time. Ibn Al-Qayyim mentions that when Imam Ahmad said "weak," he meant Hasan in their time. Early Hadith scholars such as Imam Ahmad rejected all typs of Hadith Hasan whether they were Hasan-Lidhatihi or Hasan-Lighairihi. There are numerous evidences where dozens of independent chains of the same hadith were still rejected and they did not use witness of shawahid (witness) approach to elevate it into Sahih such as this hadith: الاذنان من الراس Or this one: لا وضوء لمن لم يذكر اسم الله عليه The above hadith was outrightly rejected by early scholars despite numerous narrations, while philosophers such as Al-Bani while claiming to follow the salaf, then contradicted the salaf (muhaditheen) and patched the above hadith with a unanimously rejected and completely broken chain hadith to grade it as hasan. Ilyas also argues that many later muhaditheen (Al-Mutaakhireen) also rejected Hasan hadith such as Ad-Daraqutini and others. Sheikh Ilyas concludes this two-part series by stating that Hadith Hasan is actually doubtful and, as Muslims, we are commanded by Allah Azawajal and His Prophet Alaisalaam to avoid doubt. Therefore, Hasan Hadith are, in reality doubtful matter and therefore weak and should not be relied upon. #hasan #حسن #sahaba #tabieen #hadith #sunnah #muslimsociety #dhahiri #islam #متواتر #mutawatir #آحاد #ibnhazm #مشهور #zahiri #عزيز #taqleed #ijtihad #غريب #hanafi #maliki #hanbali #shafiee #salafi #salaf #salafiyah #independentthinking #islamicteachings #muslimempowerment #seekingguidance #criticalthinking #contemporaryissues #islamicscholars #muslimunity #quran #hadith #muslimidentity #discoveringtruth ##modernworld #islamicprinciples #muslimfaith #muslimcommunity #islamicheritage #muslimsociety #Aqeeda #Ahkaam Image Source: Shutterstock
