I've been rewiring my home studio for a few weeks—and really planning this all for a couple months. It's been a ton of work (with its fair share of setbacks), but incredibly rewarding. Today I fired up the new Solid State Logic SSL 18 preamps on my drums to see what my basic tones will be with the re-wired and re-tooled studio. A few notes: I have the 4K button 'on' for all the channels. I definitely notice a boost in gain and a bit more high end as people have described. Beyond that I can't tell you if there is more saturation or harmonic fuzz. My ears aren't tuned into that level of detail. I'm not a drummer. I typically have drummers come in to play on tunes—or, when required, do single hits or simple patterns to augment pieces I'm working on. I'm pretty thrilled with the dry drum tones and can't wait to slap an outboard Drawmer 1960 preamp on the stairwell mics (just waiting on a couple TRS cords to arrive) as I think that'll help tame and color the stairwell mics.
