THE ULTIMATE PEAK FALL FOLIAGE 2025 - This was October 7th, with the most blazing, brightest autumn colors, textures, reflections, and natural compositions of this year. 2025 Video by Douglas K. Poor - dd-TV Productions 7min 42sec The story of the brilliant fall foliage in New Hampshire is a combination of perfect geography, a specific mix of trees, and a dash of unique, unpredictable New England weather. It's not just a beautiful sight; it's a massive, annual natural experiment that draws millions of "leaf peepers" every year, especially to the White Mountains. Here is the breakdown of the "why" behind New Hampshire's famous colors: The Right Mix of Trees (The Cast of Characters) New Hampshire has a dense population of the specific tree species: Sugar Maple with Fiery Orange, Gold, and Red, The star of the show; Red Maple Deep Scarlet and Red. required to produce the most vibrant colors, unlike regions dominated by evergreen pines or oaks that only turn brown. The Science of the Color Change The colors are not created; they are revealed when the trees shut down their food production for the winter. The Green: All summer, leaves are filled with Chlorophyll, which uses sunlight to make food and gives them their green color. The Trigger: As the days get shorter and the nights get cooler in late September, the veins that carry sap to the leaves slowly close. The tree stops producing chlorophyll, and the green pigment breaks down. The Reveal (Yellow & Gold): The pigments that were always there—like Carotenoids (orange, like carrots) and Xanthophylls (yellow)—are unmasked. The Creation (Red & Purple): The most brilliant colors, the reds and purples, are caused by Anthocyanins. These pigments are newly created in the fall from excess sugars trapped in the leaf, acting like a protective sunscreen before the leaf drops. Peak Season: Late September to Early to Mid-October is generally the best time, particularly in the White Mountains (e.g., the Kancamagus Highway).
