Somewhere in Dan village in the Northern Province 22km on the eastern part of Tzaneen there was a healer known as Neverdie Mushwana. He used a python to sniff out all kinds of illnesses . He allowed the python to slide all over a patient’s body. He claimed to heal all types of illnesses at a high cost. His ancestors determined the costs. He was born three years after the passing of his grandfather and sister, and the need to ward off death compelled his father to name him Neverdie. Some healers are tormented by their ancestors until they heed the calling but with Neverdie, he chose to become a healer after visiting a friend in Gaza Mozambique who trained him from 1954 to 1957. Neverdie was a very smart man who spoke 8 African languages fluently. While explaining his choice to use the python, Mushwana had this to say; “don’t forget that illness and misfortune approach and advance on the human body like the movement of a snake. You cannot use a blade for grass to take out a thorn from the flesh. The illness must be sniffed and uprooted in the same way that it approached.” He caught the pythons by himself and preferred the younger ones which had not mated. To him, the ones that mated could not do the job. When asked about the dangers of the pythons, he said; “they are not maneaters, they are man healers.” To feed the pythons, he threw chickens into their living area. The next morning, if the chickens were alive, Neverdie understood that the snakes were full. One chicken per python. Neverdie used a grinding machine for his medicine. He was a good herbalist with other healers from Transkei, Ciskei and Mozambique. #witchcraft #africanspirituality #sangoma #python #snake #healer #africa #NeverdieMushwana #southafricanhistory #healingpower #indigenous
