Part 1 of 4 Sinhala is a unique language in many ways, not least its writing system. I wish languages in europe developed their own writing systems... (not referring to the caucasus) Those damn Romans... how dare they bring civilization to us!?!? Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 0:27 Short history of the Sinhala Script 1:55 The 6 vowels: අ, ඇ, ඉ, උ, එ, ඔ (a, ae, i, u, e, o) 3:37 Long vowels ආ ඈ ඊ ඌ ඒ ඕ 4:59 Diactritics - vowel strokes 5:40 Diactritics for long vowels 7:07 Diactritics on a different consonant 7:38 Summary 7:53 Credits This was a long time coming... I realised that all videos in YT about Sinhala language were just dry with people repeating sounds - you'll never learn anything like that, it's too boring! The song at the end is called Prtugisi Kariya (The Portuguese men • HR jothipala prutu gresi karaya song ), written and performed by H. R. Jothipala. It roughly translates to "The portuguese are the best at everything, including eating, drinking and conquering" (it loses a bit in translation). Its amazing how in contemporary Europe, Portugal is only famous through football and as a holiday destination for old Brits, but in Southeast Asia - everyone still learns about Vasco da Gama and how much 16th-17th century Portugal impacted the daily lives of people living in those areas - not always in a good way, as the song states. I'll definitely be covering how much the Portuguese influenced Sri Lankan culture at some point (Heck, if you check the books I reference, the surname of the writers is Silva, if that rings any bells) Many thanks to my wife Dinusha for providing the voice clips, and to my extended family K-Amma, U-Thaththa, A-Aiya and P-Akka for the feedback and review, as well as my two Aiyas N&A for the meme reviews.
