What Establishes a Marriage According to the Bible?

Even though marriage ceremonies today look a lot different from those in biblical times, the nature of what makes a marriage hasn’t changed. Alan Shlemon explains that marriage should be defined by Christians today the same way it's been defined in the Bible for thousands of years–as a covenant relationship between a man and a woman before God, just as Jesus affirmed in Matthew 19. He clarifies that marriage begins when couples make their commitment before God, not when they receive a government certificate, because marriage is a pre-political, God-ordained institution that existed long before governments.
