This is the pony I took care of during the beginning of the lockdown. He is 6 years old and not yet used to saddle. First month we worked on transitions, getting used to pets, halts, rein back and other essential exercises before we got to putting the saddle on. When he got used to me, started listening to my voice and waiting for a pet to come, we then began our journey into the actual backing. I started putting a saddle pad on him in his box. He was very tense and not happy about it, however he also wanted to get a carrot so he waited patiently. I did that for a week or so. Then I lunged him with a saddle pad on with elastic strap holding it. He bucked a lot for the first week. Then it got better and I started introducing the saddle to him. Again starting in his box and taking it off immediately. Then when he felt more comfortable about it we did our first lunge with the saddle on. He was super crazy jumping like a rodeo horse, couldn’t stop, put his head between his legs bucking lots. I calmed him down with the voice command eventually and gave him treats. Then we worked on walk. Because with the saddle he just wanted to run not walk. In a few weeks we already could do smooth transitions to trot and canter without bucking. Although as you can see in the beginning of the training he still takes a few circles to buck. I’m super proud of this pony and it was super fun taking care of him❤️
