Like many Americans, I had a hard time watching the violence that unfolded in Kenosha in 2020. As a native Kenoshan, I have seen first hand the problems it faces. But even more importantly, I've seen a community that continues to grow despite turmoil, a community that is constantly working and growing in hopes of being better, and a community that understands that the future is in the next generation, and thus devotes its energy to being a safe, welcoming and enriching space. I wrote "Cooler Near the Lake" in hopes of showcasing what makes Kenosha so special. The people. Lyrics: It’s cooler near the lake Let’s go And hang our legs until our toes Just lightly touch the water from the pier And when the sun it lays down head and fireflies light up and then suspend mid air to guide our journey home. That’s the Kenosha that I know. The Kenosha I call home. That’s the Kenosha that I know. The Kenosha I call home. A winter storm covers the street and for a moment, the world is clean. The velodrome is perfect for a slide. So black and white and in-between all bundled up, as we careen so wildly, freely, laughing with delight. That’s the Kenosha that I know. The Kenosha I call home.
