The Fall of the Berlin Wall was the symbol of the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, yet many of the other regimes also suffered their own collapse of communism. In Poland, Lech Walesa and Solidarity were able to force reforms under Wojciech Jaruzelski and ultimately became the lead power in the government. In Hungary, the Communist government forced their own downfall and even opened the border with Austria. In East Germany, the resignation of Eric Honecker and the protest for more reforms under Egon Krenz, resulted in the reunification of Germany and the fall of the Berlin Wall. In Czechoslovakia, opposition was led by Vaclav Havel and the Velvet Revolution of 1989 led to a peaceful transition into democracy. The change was more violent in Romania where Nicolae Ceausescu was executed with his wife after the army turned against the government.
