Building Bridges from the Lab to the Field: The Role of Large Scale Lab Facilities in Next Gen Geo

This panel features: Pejman Shoeibi Omrani, Senior Scientist - Energy Transition, TNO Dr. Ivo Vos, Senior Business Developer, Energy & Materials Transition, Rijswijk Centre for Sustainable Geo-Energy Rob Klenner, Director of Geothermal Innovation and Technology, Baker Hughes Martin Bloemendal, Assistant Professor and Senior Researcher for Geothermal Energy, Technische Universiteit Delft and KWR Water Research Institute About the Speakers: Pejman Shoeibi Omrani is a senior scientist at TNO (Dutch institute for applied sciences) and has a degree in mechanical engineering and applied mathematics from Delft university of technology. His current work is focusing on the production optimization and digitalization in the energy sector. Currently, he has led and coordinate several innovative projects on the topics of cost reduction in geothermal assets, optimizing production in sustainable heat systems and petroleum systems and also deploying digital technologies, such as digital twin and artificial intelligence, in geo-energy systems. In addition, Pejman is the SPE Netherlands digital officer since 2021. Pejman is the chair of the SPE production optimization workshop and has served as a committee member for several conferences and events including ATCE, offshore Europe, SPE geothermal workshop and SPE Europe GEOHackathon. Ivo has a geoscientific background with a commercial mindset which in his current role he applies to support the energy transition, focusing on the geothermal market and related technology development and maturation. As an effective communicator with experience in stakeholder engagement and customer relationship management, he’s actively developing partnerships around geothermal (and other) research topics that support cost and footprint reduction to accelerate market uptake and create impact for society. Rob Klenner is the Director of Geothermal Technologies & Innovation for Baker Hughes and has over 14 years of experience in subsurface technology development for geothermal, oil & gas and CCUS. Currently, he leads Baker Hughes’ Geothermal Solutions partnership with GreenFire Energy and is the Executive Director of the Wells2Watts Geothermal Consortium. He also provides strategy and thought leadership globally to enable growth opportunities in the geothermal market and the commercialization of new geothermal technologies for Baker Hughes and their customers. Prior to joining Baker Hughes, he served in various managerial and technical roles at Baker Hughes, General Electric, EERC- University of North Dakota, and The Geysers at Calpine. Mr. Klenner received a B.S. and M.S. from the Harold Hamm School of Geology at the University of North Dakota and has authored or co-authored over 25 Publications and filed over 12 U.S. and worldwide patents in energy development and digital solutions. Dr. Martin Bloemendal is an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology as well as senior researcher at KWR water research. At TU Delft Martin works on various projects to further develop ATES and BHE and he teaches courses at different levels and faculties. The combination KWR-TU Delft allows Martin to develop proof of concept of new ideas at the university and subsequently implement these in pilot projects with industry in KWR projects (bridging science to practice). Martin Bloemendal also manages the research agenda for the Dutch ATES and BHE industry. Key research topics are: integration of subsurface and surface/building facilities for optimal energy performance, HT-ATES and HT-BTES, legislation and environmental impacts.
