In this video we visit Tarro, a small station along New South Wales' Main Northern Line just outside of Newcastle. Opening on the 1st August 1871, this station is relatively quiet to the point where the local population of farm animals outnumber train passengers. It doesn't surprise me to be honest, there's not much housing surrounding the station and I assume that a number of residents in Tarro (which had a population of 1,703 in the 2021 census) would use the nearby Beresfield station where they would enjoy more train services (especially during the peaks) and better amenities. Tarro is served by NSW Trainlink services on the Hunter Line between Newcastle and Maitland. We see an Endeavour and Hunter railcar arrive and depart the station, but for the most part we see freight trains on the adjacent freight lines, including empty and loaded Pacific National and One Rail Australia coal trains but we also do see a Pacific National intermodal train heading north towards Brisbane. I mainly filmed this video while waiting for steam locomotive R766 to pass through, which was heading back to Maitland after visiting the Port Waratah Coal Loop as part of Steamfest 2023.
