Our third episode features the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. iGEM is a global academic competition aimed at improving people's understanding of synthetic biology. It is the most renowned synthetic biology competition, where student researchers around the world join forces to design and engineer biological systems to tackle real-world challenges. Projects range from ideas for improving the environment, producing new medicines or materials to even colonizing other planets. However, the various details and prerequisites for participating can seem confusing. Therefore, we at Into Their Minds talked to past participants of iGEM from IISER Thiruvananthapuram, with the goal of condensing what this competition is and what needs to be considered when applying for it.
