Tulum archaeological site is one of the top tourists spots in the Riviera Maya due to its location and the setting. Tulum is located about 128 km south of Cancun (90 min by car), or 62 km south of Playa del Carmen. Tulum was one of the last great cities constructed and inhabited by the Mayan people between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. By the end of the 16th century, the site was abandoned. The ruins are situated on 12-meter-tall (39 ft) cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. They are in the heart of the Riviera Maya on the Caribbean Sea. The site’s buildings are an evolution of architectural styles that showcase the growth of the area over the centuries. Among the important structures in Tulum are El Castillo (Tulum’s main pyramid), Temple of the Frescoes, House of the Columns, and House of the Halach Uinic.
